Dry Needling

The Osteo Clinic, St Albans

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a form of western acupuncture. It is an effective therapy used to help relieve pain and inflammation. Dry needling is used to treat myofascial pain or myofascial trigger points, which is often caused by a build up of tension in the muscle and surrounding tissue.

What is a Trigger Point?

A trigger point consists of an area of tissue such as fascia and muscle in which excess tension has built up. This tension reduces the blood supply to the tissues causing it to become painful and in some cases acute.

Treatment such as dry needling is applied directly to the affected area and causes the tissues to relax and therefore improving the blood supply which in turn speeds up the healing process and relieves pain.

Conditions which respond to dry needling include:

  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sciatic Pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries
  • Neck Pain
  • Back Pain
