How Can Osteopathy Help Pregnancy?

Pregnancy should be remembered as a joyful and exciting time, but for some women, pain, discomfort or illness can change this experience. This can be because of the tremendous changes that the body undergoes during pregnancy such as, the softening of muscles and ligaments, weight gain, increase in blood volume and heart rate in order to support the growing foetus and prepare for birth.

The descent of the baby through the pelvis is influenced by ligament laxity, hormone levels, uterine contraction, gravity and the position of the baby. Structural instability or restriction of the mothers' pelvis may interfere with the baby's passage through the birth canal.

In pregnancy the hormonal and structural changes can often lead to mechanical stress and symptoms of pain and stiffness.

Can Osteopathy influence the birth of my baby?

The goal of osteopathic treatment is to maximise the body's ability to adjust and compensate for the changes as efficiently as possible.

During pregnancy, osteopathic treatment can help to maintain good pelvic alignment and function ready for the birth. It can also be helpful at alleviating many other common complaints that are associated with pregnancy such as, pain in the leg, neck, shoulders, ribs and upper back.

Should I still see an osteopath after the birth of my baby?

After the birth of a child, some women start to experience constant back problems or postural strain. Osteopathic treatment after delivery may help provide restoration of the normal mechanics of the back and pelvis optimising the body for an active life.
